This document specifies the terminology, design, and performance of units operated by reciprocating internal combustion (RIC) engines and alternating current (AC) generators. The unit can operate either in parallel with the grid or off-grid. This document applies to onshore and marine AC generator units driven by RIC engines. This document does not apply to generator units for aviation or for driving land vehicles and locomotives. For certain special applications (such as hospitals and essential power supply for high-rise buildings), additional requirements may be necessary. The provisions of this document serve as the basis for determining any such additional requirements. For AC generator units driven by other types of reciprocating prime movers (such as steam engines), the provisions of this document serve as the basis for determining these requirements.
