Terms and Definitions The following terms and definitions apply to this document: 3.1 Buckwheat A cultivated species of the genus Fagopyrum in the family Polygonaceae. It is an annual herb. The common names are sweet buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum Moench.) and bitter buckwheat (Fagopyrum tataricum (L.) Gaertn.), with 2n=16 chromosomes. It is primarily cultivated for grain production. 3.2 Breeder's Seed The first batch of seeds from a breeder's cultivar with stable genetic traits and consistent characteristics. 3.3 Basic Seed Seeds meeting the quality standards produced directly from breeder's seed or according to the production procedures for basic seed. 3.4 Quality Seed Seeds meeting quality standards produced from basic seed or by other methods, suitable for use in crop production. 4.
