Scope

This document specifies the requirements for instruments and components of the miniature plate shear apparatus used to determine the undrained shear strength of saturated soft clays, describes the method of instrument calibration, and stipulates the requirements for test procedures, calculation of shear strength, and recording, calculation, and organization of test data.
This document is applicable to the determination of the undrained shear strength and sensitivity of marine intact or remoulded saturated soft clays in laboratory or field conditions. The determination of the undrained shear strength and sensitivity of other saturated soft clays can be carried out in accordance with this document.
