Scope

This standard specifies the inspection requirements and procedures for each inspection level of in-service drill string components. The drill string components covered by this standard include drill pipe bodies, drill pipe joints, rotary shoulder connections, drill collars, weighted drill pipes, and components at both ends of the drill string. This standard stipulates the commonly used methods and techniques in inspections.
The methods provided in this standard are intended to guide inspections and testing, and do not restrict organizations or individuals from using other technologies for inspections.
This standard specifies the qualification assessment of inspectors, describes inspection methods and equipment calibration and verification procedures for various inspection methods. This standard also includes the evaluation of defects and the marking requirements for inspected drill string components.
This standard provides the minimum requirements for manufacturers to inspect their specialized tools in Appendix A.
