Scope

This standard specifies the definitions, operating conditions, requirements, tests, and recommended values for surge arresters. This standard applies to surge arresters connected in series to high-voltage and ultra-high-voltage AC power lines. This equipment is used to prevent excessive loss of carrier signals generally in the range of 40 kHz to 500 kHz under various conditions in the power system, and to minimize interference from neighboring carriers. This standard does not apply to inductors on high-voltage power lines for other purposes or to surge arresters used in AC/DC converter stations. For information on surge arresters used in AC/DC converter stations, please refer to Appendix A.
