Scope

This document specifies the minimum requirements for equipment and key aspects of laboratory best practice testing methods for basic testing of human semen collected by ejaculation.
This document applies to the entire process of manual basic testing of human semen, as well as to the preparation of samples for computer-aided sperm analysis (CASA).
This document does not apply to the evaluation of semen after vasectomy.
Note: Considering the medical and legal consequences of semen evaluation after vasectomy, the methods in this document cannot definitively determine the complete absence of sperm in the semen.
