Scope

This document is a guidance technical document that provides background materials for establishing standards related to the effects of high-power electromagnetic environments (HPEMs) on civil systems in terms of field strength, voltage, and current. With the emergence of new transient antenna technologies and the widespread use of digital electronic products, the potential for electronic devices to be disrupted or damaged in these environments has received increasing attention. This document first provides an overview of this issue, lists relevant terms and definitions, describes the associated HPEM electromagnetic environments, and discusses the various effects of HPEM electromagnetic environments on civil systems. Finally, it summarizes the protection technologies for electronic systems to address these environments. More detailed information is provided separately in other documents of the IEC 61000 series.
