Scope
This standard provides guidelines for the aerobic collection, processing, and storage of soil used in laboratory measurements of microbial processes, biomass, and diversity. The methods recommended in this standard are not suitable for soil handling that requires maintaining anaerobic conditions at all times. This standard is primarily applicable to temperate soils. Soil collected under extreme conditions (such as permafrost and tropical soils) may require special handling.
