Scope

This standard specifies an approximate method for determining the typical material capacity of reverse shovels and grab shovels (see Figure 1) of hydraulic excavators and excavator-loaders. The capacity determination is based on the dimensions of the shovel's inner wall and the volume of the material at the top of the pile. The method of determining the shovel capacity involves dividing the material in the shovel into several simple geometric shapes. The purpose of this standard is to provide a unified method for comparing shovel capacities, rather than determining the actual shovel capacity in various application scenarios. This standard does not apply to the shovels of mechanical excavators.
