Scope

This document describes the methods for assessing the stability and buoyancy of intact (i.e., undamaged) boats, as well as the methods for assessing the buoyancy of boats prone to flooding. Using this document to evaluate stability and buoyancy can help assign each boat to a design category (C or D) that corresponds to its design load and maximum load. This document applies to the assessment and classification of stability and buoyancy for boats with a hull length of less than 6 m powered by human or mechanical propulsion, except for habitable multihull sailboats. Boats with a hull length of less than 6 m equipped with a full deck and a rapid water drainage stern compartment meeting ISO 11812 requirements may opt to be assessed according to ISO 12217-1 or ISO 12217-2. In this case, a higher design category may be specified. This document includes an assessment of the capsizing sensitivity of habitable multihull boats, the definition of feasible escape methods, and requirements for capsizing buoyancy. This document does not include: — Inflatable boats and rigid inflatable boats as covered by ISO 6185, except for specific provisions of the ISO 12217 series referenced in ISO 6185; — Personal watercraft and other similar powered boats as covered by ISO 13590; — Water toys; — Canoes and kayaks; — Paddle boats and pedal boats; — Windsurfing boards; — Surfboards, including powered surfboards; — Hydrofoil boats, foil-stabilized boats, and air-cushion vehicles when not operating in displacement mode; — Submarines. Note: Displacement mode refers to the situation where the boat is supported solely by hydrostatic forces. This document does not consider or evaluate the impact of towing, fishing, dredging, or lifting operations on stability. Such situations require separate consideration (if applicable).
