Scope
This standard specifies the information structure for the digital representation and exchange of product definition data, and is applicable to the data exchange between computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) systems.
This standard defines the file structure and language format for representing geometric, topological, and non-geometric product definition data. These formats are independent of the modeling method used, and they support data exchange via physical media or electronic communication protocols (defined in other standards).
