Scope

This standard specifies the guidelines and basic requirements that should be followed in the design of spent fuel off-pool storage tanks (hereinafter referred to as "off-pool tanks") to ensure nuclear safety. This standard applies to the safety design of off-pool tanks used to store spent fuel removed from water-cooled reactors and cooled for more than five years. This standard also applies to the safety design of off-pool tanks used to store components of other types of spent fuel and fuel assemblies, such as those removed from gas-cooled reactors. This standard does not apply to the safety design of reactor pool tanks.
