Scope

This section specifies the identification and classification of areas where explosive dust environments and potentially flammable dust layers exist, in order to appropriately assess the ignition sources in these areas. In this section, explosive dust environments and flammable dust layers are treated separately. Chapter 4 describes the classification of areas with explosive dust clouds, while dust layers are identified as one of the possible release sources. Chapter 7 describes the ignition hazards of dust layers. This section adopts effective on-site cleaning based on factory cleanup to prevent the accumulation of dust layers. If effective on-site cleaning is not implemented, the classification of the area will include the potential formation of explosive dust clouds from dust layers. Areas where flammable fibers or flammable flying particles may pose a risk can also follow the principles of this section. This section applies to areas where explosive dust environments or flammable dust layers may pose a risk under normal atmospheric conditions. This section does not apply to: -- underground coal mine areas; -- areas where the presence of heterogeneous mixtures poses a risk; -- explosive dust from dynamite or self-igniting substances that do not require oxygen in the atmosphere for combustion; -- exceptional catastrophic accidents beyond the scope of this section (see Note 1); -- hazards caused by flammable or toxic gases emitted with dust. This section does not consider the impacts of damage following fires or explosions.
