Scope

This document specifies the method for measuring the exhaust smoke opacity of reciprocating internal combustion engines (RICs) under steady-state conditions. The method evaluates the carbon smoke content by measuring the blackness of the filter paper and deriving the mass concentration of carbon black (mg/m3) from the FSN. If necessary, separate requirements may also be specified for engines used for specific purposes. This document applies to mobile, transport, and stationary reciprocating internal combustion engines, such as earthmoving machinery, generator sets, and other off-road engines, but excludes road engines used for transporting passengers and cargo. For engines used in machinery and equipment with additional requirements (such as occupational health and safety regulations, power plant procedures), supplementary test conditions and special evaluation methods are provided.
