Scope
In order to achieve the recognition of magnetic ink characters, the first part of this standard specifies the shape, size, and allowable errors of 10 numbers and 4 symbols; it describes various printing defects, allowable errors, and other related matters, and explains the measurement of signal levels. This standard also mentions the photoelectric character recognition technology often associated with E13B magnetic ink character recognition. The characters specified in the first part of the standard were originally developed for automatic data processing in banks, but they are also applicable to other automatic information processing systems.
