Basic Information
Scope
The Common Information Model (CIM) is an abstract model that describes all the main objects of power enterprises, especially those related to power operation. By providing a standard method of representing power system resources using object classes, attributes, and their relationships, CIM facilitates the integration and interoperability of energy management system (EMS) applications independently developed by different manufacturers, the integration of multiple independently developed complete EMS systems, and the integration between EMS systems and other systems involved in different aspects of power system operation, such as power generation or distribution management systems. SCADA systems need to be modeled to the extent that supports communication between power system simulation and control centers. CIM facilitates integration by defining a common language (i.e., semantics) based on CIM, enabling these applications or systems to access common data and exchange information without relying on the internal representation of information.
