Basic Information
Scope
This document describes the method of monitoring short-cycle and small-batch production processes using conventional control charts when the subgroup size is limited to 1. It provides a set of tools to help understand the sources of fluctuations in these processes, so as to better manage them.
This document is applicable to the process control of measurement-type quality characteristics when the subgroup size is 1. The control charts involved here are process-oriented rather than product-oriented. Users can plot points, monitor, and control similar characteristics of different products, or different characteristics of the same product on the same control chart.
Note 1: The definitions of short-cycle and small-batch are not perfect. In this document, short-cycle and small-batch refer to the situation where a product is only produced in small quantities before another product is produced subsequently.
Note 2: For cases where the subgroup size is greater than 1, other standards apply.
