Scope

This standard specifies the forces and torques based on mass and braking conditions that should be considered in the design of non-powered axles for railway vehicles, as well as the determination of the geometric characteristics of various parts of the axle and the allowable stress. This standard applies to the design of solid and hollow non-powered axles for various track gauges 1) used in railway passenger cars and freight cars. The design of non-powered axles for light rail vehicles and trolley cars can be used as a reference. This standard does not apply to the design of non-powered axles for locomotives and powered bogies.
