Main technical content: 1. Site selection and land preparation 1.1 Site selection - Select areas with a history of Astragalus cultivation, high yield and good quality. The site should be located at an altitude of 1,400–1,800 meters, with deep, loose soil, strong drainage and permeability, and a slope of 15–45°. Preferentially choose sandy loam slopes with high organic matter content or well-drained, sun-exposed areas with deep soil layers. The soil should be neutral or slightly acidic. Poorly fertilized and clay-rich soils are unsuitable for Astragalus cultivation. In recent years, Hunnan County has effectively utilized existing land resources by planting on barren mountains and slopes. 1.2 Land preparation - Use manual or mechanical methods to remove weeds and shrubs on the slope. The depth of loosening should be at least 30 cm, and the removed weeds and shrubs should be cleared from the plot. - Divide the plot into 4–6 m wide terraces along contour lines, using stones or grass-rooted soil to build embankments to prevent runoff during heavy rain, soil erosion, and damage to Astragalus plants. At the same time, construct drainage ditches according to the terrain to ensure proper water discharge. 2 Planting density During the density experiment, irrigation was conducted once during the pod-setting period (mid-June) with a volume of 1.8 m3 per plot (60 m3 per mu).
