Scope

This document describes the methods for determining the porosity of shale using helium injection and liquid saturation; for determining the permeability of shale using steady-state methods, pulse attenuation methods, and pressure drop methods; and for determining the water saturation of shale using liquid saturation, nuclear magnetic resonance, and distillation extraction methods.
This document is applicable to the determination of shale porosity using helium injection and liquid saturation methods; to the determination of shale permeability using steady-state methods, pulse attenuation methods, and pressure drop methods; and to the determination of shale water saturation using liquid saturation, nuclear magnetic resonance, and distillation extraction methods.
The range of porosity determination using the helium injection method in this document is 1.0% to 10.0%, and the range of porosity determination using the liquid saturation method is 1.0% to 10.0%; the range of permeability determination using the pulse attenuation method is 1.0×10-5 mD to 1.0×10-1 mD, the range of permeability determination using the steady-state method is 1.0×10-5 mD to 1.0×102 mD, and the range of permeability determination using the pressure drop method is 1.0×10-3 mD to 1.0×104 mD; the range of water saturation determination using the liquid saturation method is 1.0% to 100.0%, the range of water saturation determination using the nuclear magnetic resonance method is 1.0% to 100.0%, and the range of water saturation determination using the distillation extraction method is 1.0% to 100.0%.
