Scope

This standard specifies the general requirements and packaging and marking requirements for surgical gauze dressings made from defatted cotton gauze or defatted cotton blended with viscose. The surgical gauze dressings specified in this standard can be supplied either sterile or non-sterile. The main varieties include abdominal towels, gauze swabs (rolled or spherical), gauze blocks, etc. Note: Appendix A recommends the types of gauze that can be detected by X-rays for surgical gauze dressings. This standard does not address the requirements for the types and contents of antibiotics in surgical gauze dressings containing antibiotics.
