本文件规定了金属努氏硬度试验的原理、硬度计、试样、试验程序、结果的不确定度及试验报告。本文件规定了试验力值范围为 0.009 807 N～19.613 N的努氏硬度试验。本文件规定了压痕对角线长度不小于0.020 mm的努氏硬度试验。由于光学测量系统的局限性和压头几何形状的不完美导致较大的不确定度，使用这种方法从较小的压痕中确定努氏硬度不在本文件的范围内，因为结果会有很大的不确定性。本文件还规定了使用者对硬度计作日常检查的周期性检查方法。
