Scope

This standard specifies two methods for preparing fatty acid methyl esters: the boron trifluoride method and the potassium hydroxide-hydrogen chloride method. It also describes a method for quantitatively analyzing fatty acids in fats using gas chromatography with a capillary column and a flame ionization detector. This standard is applicable to the determination of fatty acids in animal and plant fats, oils used in animal feed preparation, mixed fatty acids, and extracts of compound feed fats (including fats and fatty acid mixtures containing butyric acid). This standard is not applicable to polymerized fatty acids.
