Scope

This document specifies the design and integration methods, relevant requirements, recommendations, and guidelines for safety control systems (SRP/CS) that implement safety functions, including software design.
This document applies to SRP/CS used in high-demand and continuous operation modes, including subsystems, regardless of the technology and energy used (e.g., electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, mechanical). It does not apply to low-demand operation modes.
Note 1: For low-demand operation modes, see 3.1.44 and IEC 61508 (all parts). This document does not specify the safety functions or required performance levels (PLr) for specific applications.
Note 2: This document does not consider the special requirements of certain machinery (e.g., mobile machinery) when specifying SRP/CS design methods. Such special requirements are addressed by Class C standards.
This document does not provide specific design requirements for SRP/CS products/components. Specific requirements for the design of certain SRP/CS components are covered by applicable ISO and IEC standards.
This document does not provide specific measures for physical security, IT security, and network security.
