Scope

This standard specifies the safety requirements for retractable rope starter devices for internal combustion engines, which can be applied to land-based, rail traction, and marine reciprocating internal combustion engines, except for road vehicles and aeronautical internal combustion engines. This standard can also be applied to road construction machinery, earthmoving machinery, and other internal combustion engines for which there are currently no suitable standards available.
In addition to stipulating safety requirements, this standard also includes inspection methods for complying with these requirements.
This standard only addresses the relevant hazards when installing and using retractable rope starter devices.
