Scope

This standard specifies the evaluation method for the antibacterial performance of plastic products (including semi-finished products) that have undergone antibacterial treatment.
Note: This standard is also applicable to the detection of the antibacterial performance of other non-porous materials that have undergone antibacterial treatment.
This method is not suitable for evaluating the bacterial activity and reproduction on unprocessed plastics. ISO 846 describes some test methods for evaluating the bacterial activity and reproduction on plastics that differ from the methods covered by this standard. Those interested can refer to ISO 846:1997 Method C.
This standard does not address the secondary effects brought about by antibacterial treatment, such as preventing plastic biocorrosion and odor, nor does it apply to the evaluation of plastic biodegradability. For biodegradability tests, reference can be made to ISO 14851, ISO 14852, ISO 14855 (see references) and other related standards.
This standard does not apply to plastic used in construction, such as PVC or composite materials, unless they are treated with antibacterial agents in the same way.
Any results obtained in accordance with this standard must refer to this standard and its test conditions. The results obtained using this standard represent the antibacterial performance under the experimental conditions of this standard, and do not represent the antibacterial performance under other conditions such as temperature, humidity, bacterial species, and nutrients. For antibacterial testing using this method, a minimum dose of antibacterial agents (chemicals) must be dissolved into the inoculum.
It is recommended that testers refer to ISO 7218 for microbiological operations.
