Scope
This document describes a method of determining the thickness of metal coatings by forming steps between the surface of the coating and the surface of the base metal, and then using a profilometer to measure the height of the steps. It also specifies the characteristics of the instrument and the special measurement procedures of the profilometer method. This document is suitable for measuring the thickness of metal coatings on flat surfaces ranging from 0.01 μm to 1,000 μm. If appropriate measures are taken, it can also be used to measure the thickness of metal coatings on cylindrical surfaces. This document is also suitable for measuring the thickness of standard coating samples. This document is not suitable for measuring the thickness of tiny coatings that are less than 0.01 μm and have low flatness and smoothness on the working surface.
