Scope

This guidance technical document provides an ultrasonic propagation time method for flow measurement of water turbines, storage pumps, and pump-turbines, including measurement principles, testing methods and calibration, and measurement uncertainty. This guidance technical document is applicable to on-site flow measurement of water turbines, storage pumps, and pump-turbines in pressurized flow channels with circular or rectangular cross-sections, where the diameter or equivalent diameter is not less than 0.8 m; it is not applicable to flow measurement in model tests of water turbines, storage pumps, and pump-turbines. This guidance technical document is applicable to flow measurement using ultrasonic propagation time devices with internal or external transducers (hereinafter referred to as flow measurement devices), but it is not applicable to flow measurement using ultrasonic flowmeters with external transducers.
