This standard specifies the requirements for the full-circumference automatic ultrasonic transverse wave detection of longitudinal and/or transverse defects in welded steel pipes, except for seamless steel pipes and submerged arc welding.
Unless the purchaser specifically requires it in the contract, the method generally used is the detection of longitudinal defects.
When conducting the detection of longitudinal defects, the manufacturer may also decide to use Lamb waves for the detection on its own.
For seamless pipes, by mutual agreement between the supplier and the purchaser, the detection principles of this standard can be used to detect defects in other directions.
This standard applies to the ultrasonic detection of steel pipes with an outer diameter of not less than 6 mm and a ratio of outer diameter to wall thickness of not less than 5. For the detection of longitudinal defects in steel pipes with a ratio of outer diameter to wall thickness of less than 5, see Appendix A.
The detection of circular hollow parts can be carried out in accordance with this standard, and the manual ultrasonic detection can be carried out in accordance with this standard.
