Abstract

This document describes the methods of measuring the airborne sound insulation performance of external wall components (component method) and entire external walls (external wall method) using sound pressure.
This document is applicable to measurements in rooms with a volume of 10 m3 to 250 m3 within the frequency range of 50 Hz to 5,000 Hz.
The test results can be used to quantify, evaluate, and compare airborne sound insulation performance, regardless of whether there are furnishings in the room or whether the sound field is approximately diffuse. The measured airborne sound insulation performance is frequency-dependent and can be converted into a single-value evaluation quantity characterizing acoustic performance according to the methods given in GB/T 50121 and ISO 717-1.
The component method is used to determine the sound insulation of external wall components, such as windows. The most accurate component method is to use a speaker as an artificial sound source, while the accuracy of the method using actual traffic noise as a sound source is slightly lower. The external wall method aims to determine the sound level difference between the outdoors and indoors under actual traffic conditions. The most accurate external wall method is to use actual traffic noise as a sound source. When the received traffic noise level indoors is not high enough, a speaker should be used as an artificial sound source. Table 1 provides an overview of these methods.
