This part of the "Explosive Environments" standard provides guidelines for equipment, products, and processes to avoid the hazards of electrostatic ignition and electric shock, as well as operational requirements to ensure the safe use of equipment, products, or processes.
This part is applicable to risk assessments of electrostatic hazards, or to the development of standards for electrical or non-electrical equipment or specialized products.
Electrostatic hazards that commonly cause problems in industrial processes and environments are considered. These processes include the handling of solids, liquids, powders, gases, sprays, and explosives. For each case, the sources and characteristics of electrostatic hazards are identified, and specific handling recommendations are provided.
The purpose of this part is to provide standard recommendations for controlling electrostatic, such as grounding conductors, reducing electrostatic charging, and limiting the chargeable area of insulating components. In some cases, electrostatic is a part of the process, such as electrostatic spray painting, but the negative effects of electrostatic are the focus of this part. If the standard recommendations in this part can be met, the hazards of electrostatic discharge in explosive environments can be reduced to an acceptable low level.
If the requirements of this part cannot be met, other methods that at least meet the same safety level can also be used.
Note: The causes of electrostatic generation in solids, liquids, gases, explosives, and human bodies, as well as how electrostatic can lead to ignition or electric shock, are described in Appendices A and B of this part and IEC/TR 613401.
This part is not applicable to electrostatic hazards related to lightning, nor to damage to electronic components.
This part does not replace standards related to specific products and specific industrial environments.
