This standard specifies the terms, definitions, and symbols for the safety assessment of in-service pressure vessels with defects, general principles, fracture and plastic failure assessment, and fatigue failure assessment. This standard applies to the safety assessment of in-service steel pressure vessels with exceeded standard defects. Pressure components in boilers, pipelines, and other metal material containers can also be referenced for safety assessment. This standard applies to the safety assessment of pressure components with the following types of defects: a) planar defects: including cracks, non-fusion, non-penetration, and bite edges with a depth greater than or equal to 1 mm; b) volumetric defects: including pits, pores, slag inclusions, and bite edges with a depth less than 1 mm. This standard does not apply to the following pressure vessels and structures: a) pressure vessels and structures subject to nuclear radiation in nuclear energy devices; b) non-independent pressurized components on machines (such as pressurized shells or cylinders of compressors, generators, pumps, and diesel engines); c) pressurized components subject to direct fire; d) capacitive pressure vessels (enclosed electrical equipment) used exclusively in the power industry; e) pressure vessels and structures with potential failure modes including creep.
