This document specifies the minimum components of the Global Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) for identifying legal entities involved in financial transactions. This document applies to legal entities, including but not limited to parties legally or financially responsible for conducting financial transactions, or parties with the right to independently sign legal contracts, whether established as corporations or otherwise (such as trusts, partnerships, or contracts). This document also applies to government agencies, international organizations, individuals engaged in commercial activities, and international branches (see 3.5). This document does not apply to natural persons. The LEI is designed for automated processes. When appropriate, the LEI can also be used for information exchange in other media (e.g., paper document exchange). Note: Eligible legal entities include but are not limited to: -- Banks and financial companies; -- International branches; -- All institutions that issue stocks, bonds, or other securities for other capital structures; -- Other financial intermediaries; -- All companies listed on exchanges; -- All institutions or legal entities involved in financial instrument transactions, including commercial entities, pension funds, investment vehicles (such as collective investment funds at the umbrella or sub-fund level), and other special-purpose entities with legal form; -- All legal entities subject to financial regulation and their subsidiaries, affiliates, and holding companies; -- Self-employed individuals (as an example of individuals engaged in commercial activities); -- Financial transaction counterparties.
