Scope

This guidance technical document describes the surge voltage and surge current environments in low-voltage AC power supply (≤1,000 V), excluding other power quality issues such as voltage drops and electrical noise. The surge duration considered in the standard does not exceed half a power frequency cycle. These surges may be periodic or random events, and they can occur between the live wire, neutral wire, and ground wire. Generally, surge protectors (SPDs) are used to limit the amplitude of voltage and current to dissipate dangerous surge energy. For surges that only cause interference to equipment, other methods are typically used to eliminate them.
