Scope

This test is suitable for components or equipment intended to withstand a saline atmosphere. During the test, the corresponding severity level is selected based on their tolerance.
Salt can reduce the performance of metal materials and/or non-metallic materials. The mechanism of salt corrosion for metal materials is electrochemical corrosion, while the degradation of non-metallic materials is caused by the comprehensive chemical reaction between salt and the material. The corrosion rate largely depends on the amount of oxygen-containing salt solution supplied to the surface of the sample, the temperature of the sample and the environment, and humidity.
In addition to showing the corrosion effect, this test can also show the degree of degradation of some non-metallic materials due to salt absorption. In the following test method, the time of spraying salt solution is sufficient to fully wet the entire sample. Since this wetting is repeated after storage under humid and hot conditions (Severity Levels (1) and (2)), and in some cases, it is supplemented by storage under the standard test atmosphere (Severity Levels (3) to (6)), it can effectively reproduce the effects of the natural environment.
Severity Levels (1) and (2) are suitable for testing products used in marine environments or offshore areas. Severity Level (1) is suitable for testing products exposed to such environments during most of their service life (e.g., shipborne radars, deck equipment). Severity Level (2) is suitable for testing products that may be frequently exposed to marine environments but are usually protected by enclosures (e.g., navigation equipment typically used in ship bridges or control rooms).
In addition, Severity Levels (1) and (2) are usually used as ordinary corrosion tests in the quality assurance process of components.
Severity Levels (3) to (6) are suitable for products that are often used alternately between saline and dry atmospheres, such as autom
