Scope

This part applies to controllers and starters that can be equipped with a series of mechanical switchgear and connected to circuits with a rated voltage not exceeding 1,000 V AC. This part specifies the characteristics of controllers and starters used with or without bypass switchgear. Controllers and starters within the scope of this part are generally not used for interrupting short-circuit currents. Therefore, controllers and starters should be equipped with appropriate short-circuit protection devices (see 8.2.5) as part of them, but they do not need to be installed internally. This part specifies the requirements for controllers and starters in conjunction with separate short-circuit protection devices.
