Scope

This standard specifies three test methods for vanilla (Vanilla fragrans (Salisbury) Ames): a) determination of the moisture content of vanilla pods and vanilla powder (4.1); b) high-performance liquid chromatography determination of vanillin, vanillic acid, 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde, and 4-hydroxybenzoic acid (4.2); c) ultraviolet spectroscopy determination of vanillin (4.3). This standard is applicable to the quality evaluation and trade of vanilla (pods, bundled pods, crushed vanilla, and vanilla powder). It is not applicable to vanilla extracts.
