Scope
This standard specifies a procedure by which manufacturers can identify hazards related to medical devices and their accessories (including in vitro diagnostic medical devices), estimate and evaluate risks, control these risks, and monitor the effectiveness of the controls. The requirements of this standard apply to all stages of the life cycle of medical devices. This standard is not intended for clinical judgments related to the use of medical devices. It does not specify acceptable risk levels. This standard does not require manufacturers to have a formal quality system. However, risk management can be an integral part of a quality system (for example, see Table G.1 in Appendix G).
