Scope

The first method of GB/T 14455 specifies a method for evaluating the content of free alcohols and total alcohols in essential oils and determining the alcohol content of single-separated and synthetic fragrances by measuring the ester value before and after acetylation of the sample with acetic anhydride in the presence of sodium acetate. This method is not suitable for essential oils containing a large amount of tertiary alcohols (such as linalool and pinene alcohol), as tertiary alcohols cannot be completely acetylated; nor is it suitable for essential oils containing a large amount of phenols, lactones, aldehydes, and ketones that are easily enolized, as these components will also be acetylated in addition to free alcohols.
