Scope
This document defines terms related to cell counting in the field of biotechnology, describes cell counting in suspensions (usually cell concentration) and cell counting adhered to substrates (usually cell area density), provides general principles for cell counting methods (including total and categorical counting, direct counting, and indirect counting), as well as key considerations for method selection and measurement processes, and specifies requirements for data processing, analysis, and reporting. This document is applicable to counting all types of cells, including mammalian and non-mammalian (such as bacteria and yeast) cells. It is not applicable to cell counting in tissue sections or biomaterial substrates. There are existing international and national standards related to cell counting in different fields/specific application scenarios. When applicable, users can refer to existing standards within their scope (specific measurement techniques and/or application scenarios) when operating.
