Scope

This document specifies the requirements and recommended practices for the safe and reliable design, construction, and operation of CO2 flow transmission pipelines. It also stipulates the media properties of CO2 flow, health, safety, and environmental aspects related to CO2 transmission and monitoring. This document applies to: -- Rigid metal pipelines; -- Pipeline systems; -- Onshore and offshore pipelines for CO2 flow transmission; -- CO2 flow transmission pipelines modified from existing pipelines; -- CO2 flow transmission for storage or utilization purposes; -- CO2 transmission in gas and dense phases. The system boundary node between capture and transmission is located at the pipeline inlet valve, as shown in Figure 1. To meet the transmission requirements specified in this document, the composition, temperature, and pressure of the CO2 flow are controlled within specified limits through the capture process or technology. The system boundary node between transmission and storage is located where the CO2 flow leaves the transmission pipeline and enters the storage infrastructure. Index number explanations: 1 -- CO2 from capture points, such as power plants and other factories; 2 -- isolation joints; 3 -- pipeline system boundary; 4 -- CO2 from other sources; 5 -- Pipeline systems applicable to this document; 6 -- Boundary to storage facilities; 7 -- Onshore storage facilities; 8 -- Offshore storage facilities; 9 -- Enhanced oil recovery (EOR) facilities; 10 -- Standpipes (not included in the transmission system); 11 -- Subsea valves (included in the transmission system); 12 -- Beach valves; 13 -- Offshore pipelines; 14 -- Onshore pipelines; 15 -- Valves; 16 -- Coastline; 17 -- Open water; 18 -- Third-party transmission systems; 19 -- Exits for purposes other than 7, 8, and 9; 20 -- Intermediate pressure boosting devices.
