Scope

This document describes a method for determining the sensitivity of machine vibration to imbalance, and provides evaluation guidelines for this sensitivity (which is a function of the proximity of the relevant resonance speed to the operating speed). This document focuses only on the fundamental frequency vibration caused by imbalance, and provides suggestions on how to apply the sensitivity values to certain special situations. The document includes a classification system for machines based on the variability of imbalance. Machines are divided into three types according to their variability and five sensitivity ranges. These sensitivity values are intended for simple mechanical systems, where the rotor should ideally have only one resonance speed over the entire operating speed range. These sensitivity values can also be used for machines with multiple resonance speeds within the operating speed range, but it is required that these resonance speeds be widely spaced apart (for example, more than 20% apart). These sensitivity values are not intended to be used as acceptance criteria for any type of machine, but rather to provide guidance on how to avoid excessive defects or overly demanding requirements that are difficult to meet. They can also serve as the basis for further related investigations and research, for example, where it may be necessary to determine the sensitivity more precisely in specific situations. If the given sensitivity values are taken into full consideration, the machine is expected to operate satisfactorily in most cases. Considering only the sensitivity values does not guarantee that the vibration during operation will not exceed the given vibration limits. Many other vibration sources may also cause vibration, but these are beyond the scope of this document.
