Scope
This document defines the basic concepts of digital certificates for healthcare, provides an interoperability solution for secure communication of health information using digital certificates, identifies the main stakeholders involved in health information communication, and outlines the essential security services required for such communication. This document describes the public-key cryptography algorithms and fundamental components needed to configure digital certificates for healthcare, and introduces different types of digital certificates (including identity certificates, certificates for associated attributes of trusted parties, and self-signed CA certificates), as well as CA hierarchy systems and bridging structures. This document is intended for use by health information security professionals and developers specializing in the design and development of health information applications.
