本文件规定了铁磁性无缝和焊接钢管的管体表面缺欠和管端端面/坡口缺欠的磁粉检测要求。本文件规定了钢管全部或部分管体外表面缺欠的检测要求。经买方和制造商协商同意，可适用于距离管端有限长度（取决于钢管直径）的内表面检测。本文件在适用时，可用于由其他无损检测（如超声）方法检测到的外表面缺欠在修磨前的定位，以及缺欠在修磨后被彻底清除的确认。本文件规定了平端管和坡口面管两端的端面/坡口处可能影响后续制造和检测（如焊接和焊缝超声检测）的层状缺欠的检测要求。本文件适用于端面/坡口上层状缺欠及其他缺欠的检测。在此情况下，磁场方向尽量垂直于被检缺欠的方向。本文件也适用于空心部件的检测。
