Scope

This document describes the steps for determining the sulfur and sulfate ester content in cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) in the laboratory using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) and conductometric titration, respectively.
This document is applicable to the following types of cellulose nanocrystals:
a) with monovalent counterions (especially hydrated hydrogen ions and sodium ions);
b) undried or redispersed from a dried state to form a dispersion solution;
c) obtained from natural cellulose raw materials through sulfuric acid hydrolysis or hydrolysis followed by sulfuric acid acidification.
