Scope

This section specifies the entity authentication mechanism using symmetric encryption algorithms. There are four types of authentication mechanisms that do not involve a trusted third party between two entities. Among these four mechanisms, two are for a single entity to authenticate (one-way authentication), and the other two are for two entities to authenticate each other. The remaining mechanisms all require the participation of a trusted third party to establish a common secret key and achieve mutual or one-way entity authentication.
