Scope

This specification is part of the VXI bus specification and defines the network instrumentation protocol, which can be used for communication between controllers and devices based on TCP/IP networks. The only network directly mentioned in this specification is a network supporting the Internet Protocol Suite. The technologies defined in this specification can be applied on other networks (such as networks supporting the OSI protocol standard), but this document does not address the relevant conversions. This specification uses Open Network Computing (ONC) remote procedure calls (RPC) at the upper layer of the Internet Protocol Suite. The ONC/RPC protocol is only used as a protocol specification on the network and does not specify a specific application interface. The network instrumentation host can also support other network protocols.
