Scope

Gas discharge tubes (GDTs) are used in communication or signal circuits with an AC voltage not exceeding 1,000 V or a DC voltage not exceeding 1,500 V. They are defined as devices consisting of a single or multiple gaps sealed in a non-air discharge medium, used to protect electrical appliances and human beings from transient overvoltages. This section does not address the requirements of the complete technical specifications for surge protectors, nor does it cover all the requirements for GDT technology used in electronic devices. The precise coordination between the performance of GDTs and the tolerance of surge protectors is extremely demanding.
