Scope

This part of GB/T 38091 specifies the control grading method for occupational risk management of nanomaterials, which is applicable to controlling the related risks of occupational exposure to nano-objects and their aggregates and agglomerates (NOAA) greater than 100 nm, even when the information on toxicity and quantitative exposure assessment is limited or lacking.
The ultimate goal of control grading is to control exposure and prevent possible negative impacts on human health. The control grading tools described in this part are specifically designed for inhalation control. For guidelines on skin and eye protection, please refer to ISO/TS 12901-1[2].
This part applies to man-made NOAA, including nanoparticles, nanopowders, nanofibers, nanotubes, and their aggregates and agglomerates. In this part, the term "NOAA" refers to nanocomponents in their initial state or those incorporated into materials or reagents that can be released during the use cycle. However, for many other industrial processes, nanotechnology processes may unintentionally produce by-products in the form of NOAA, and these potential health and safety issues also deserve attention.
This part provides an easy-to-understand practical method for controlling occupational exposure, aiming to assist enterprises and other organizations, including research institutions engaged in the manufacture, processing, or handling of NOAA.
Control grading is applicable to occupational health-related issues during the R&D, manufacture, and use of NOAA under normal or generally predictable conditions, including maintenance and cleaning operations, but excluding accidental or unexpected circumstances.
Control grading is not intended to be directly used in the fields of safety management, environment, or transportation; it is only a part of the overall process of risk control.
This part is not applicable to materials of biological origin.
