Scope

This document provides a method for understanding and correlating the various parts of ISO/IEC 11179, and it serves as a foundation for conceptually understanding metadata and metadata registration systems. This document also describes the relationship between ISO/IEC 11179 and other standards, technical specifications, and technical reports of JTC 1/SC 32. In all parts of ISO/IEC 11179, metadata specifically refers to the description of data and does not include the general processing of metadata. Note: JTC 1/SC 32 is a subcommittee of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), under the First Joint Technical Committee (JTC 1) and the Data Management and Exchange Subcommittee (SC 32).
